Khyon Gillespie and Oneil Robinson, Hartford residents who were on the UConn football roster this past season, were arrested by UConn police after surrendering to active warrants over the past few days.
Gillespie and Robinson were both charged with third-degree burglary, sixth degree larceny and providing a false statement. The active warrant was issued on Feb. 3; Gillespie surrendered on Monday, Robinson on Wednesday. No further information was released on the arrests. Sixth-degree larceny generally involves entering a residence without permission, while third-degree burglary involves taking no more than $250 worth of valuables.
According to a statement released by UConn, Robinson is no longer a member of the team and Gillespie has been suspended indefinitely.
“We are aware of the situation … We have been in communication with the appropriate parties and will continue to cooperate with the authorities throughout the process,” the statement said.
Gillespie, a redshirt freshman running back, played at Capital Prep Magnet School and was declared ineligible this season due to academics. Robinson, a sophomore defensive back who also played at Capital Prep, has entered the transfer portal and is no longer listed on UConn’s roster. He played in nine games last season, registering 19 tackles and an interception.
