Sammy Wheeler, Kansas State tight end, was arrested Sunday morning on multiple charges.
The Kansas State University Police Department arrested Wheeler at 12:43 a.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of Thurston Street on charges of unlawful use of a driver’s license, purchase/possession/consumption of liquor by a minor (first offense) and interference with a law enforcement officer (intending to obstruct by falsely reporting information). Authorities added a fourth charge Monday morning: urinating in public.
He’s free after posting a $500 bond. His arrest came just one day before turned 21 — Wheeler’s birthday is May 18.
The football program had no official statement on Wheeler’s arrest; a spokesperson told The Mercury on Sunday that “the matter will be handled internally.”
A rising third-year sophomore, Wheeler appeared in seven games last fall before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in K-State’s 38-10 win at Kansas on Nov. 2.
Wheeler began his career as a quarterback before shifting to tight end last spring. He redshirted during his freshman season in 2018.
Hopes are high for what Wheeler still might be able to accomplish at tight end as he continues to learn about his new position.
“The biggest thing would be, obviously he’s a big enough guy, even though he’s not huge, to get in the backside as a tight end,” offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham said Nov. 14. “Maybe not be at the point of attack in the run game standpoint, but yet then still be able to stress people in the passing game. He’s obviously a much more fluid athlete than the other tight ends.”
Head coach Chris Klieman praised the “great leaps” he saw from Wheeler starting with preseason camp in August and into the middle of October.
“I think everybody saw some glimpses in the spring that we were excited about,” Klieman said. “I think probably, even as coaches, we maybe had some unrealistic expectations early for a kid that made (the switch) three or four practices in on how far along he would be. … I’ve been really impressed with Sammy. Once again, a young player that’s going to have an exceptional career at that position.”
Three Kansas State football players arrested this weekend in Manhattan
A trio of Kansas State football players: Jacardia Wright, DeMarrquese Hayes, and Nick Allen were arrested overnight in Manhattan.
Jacardia Wright, a redshirt freshman running back who rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown last season, was arrested by K-State police for failure to appear at 3:49 a.m. on Sunday at the 1500 block of Midcampus Drive.
He was confined with a bond of $500, according to the Riley County media arrest report.
DeMarrquese Hayes was another K-State football player that appeared on the arrest report this weekend.
A 6-foot-2 freshman linebacker from Waco, Texas, Hayes was arrested by Riley County police at 9:55 p.m. Saturday for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol. The arrest report noted that this was his first time being suspected for such a violation, but he was incapable of driving safely.
Hayes was not confined after the arrest. No bond was listed. The arrest was made on the corner of Denison Avenue and Platt Street.
Nick Allen was the third K-State football player that appeared on the arrest report.
Allen, a redshirt sophomore linebacker, was arrested at 9:08 p.m. on Saturday for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The arrest report indicated there was competent evidence of blood/breath over the legal driving limit.
The arrest was made by the Kansas Highway Patrol at the intersection of Manhattan Avenue and Kimball. He was not confined after paying a bond of $1,500.

Hunter Rison, K-State WR, arrested for domestic battery
Hunter Rison, the son of former NFL receiver Andre Rison, was arrested Friday for domestic battery and suspended by Kansas State on Saturday.
Rison faces a charge of domestic battery to a family/person in a dating relationship. He is free on $1,000 bond.
The 20-year-old was indefinitely suspended from the team for a violation of team and departmental policy on Saturday. The school did not provide further explanation for the suspension.
Rison, a redshirt sophomore, transferred from Michigan State and sat out last season.
In his freshman year, Rison played in 12 games for the Spartans with 19 receptions for 224 yards.
Rison is the son of former Michigan State and NFL receiver, Andre Rison.

Bronson Massie, K-State defensive end, arrested for unpaid parking tickets
Bronson Massie, a sophomore defensive end with the Kansas State football team, was arrested on a warrant for unpaid parking tickets early Thursday morning in Manhattan.
